4394 - ANTIQUE WINCHESTER 1866 CARBINE.
Model 1866 Winchesters such as this are getting very hard to come by. This gun is fresh to our website and as far as I know, has never been offered to the collecting fraternity. It is an untouched 1866 "Yellow Boy" as native Americans coined it due to its distinctive brass frame. This gun has a deep, rich, blue-brown patina to the barrel with King and Henry patent markings. It's an extremely early 1866 Winchester and in the 17XXX range. The frame is uncleaned, and the wood shows age and use but no abuse. A nice gun that is modestly priced.

4387 - SPRINGFIELD MUSKET MODEL OF 1816 IN ULTRA-RARE, EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Springfield Flintlock Muskets in this condition are about impossible to find. This is the best one I've ever offered, and ever seen for an 1816. It's dated 1830 and retains 98% original brown lacquer finish to the barrel, mottled case-colors to its original flintlock, and excellent wood. The gun shows no use or carry and has just aged from time. All markings, edges, action and cartouches are near perfect. Almost 700,000 of these muskets were manufactured by the Springfield and Harpers Ferry arsenals from 1816 through 1840. Most of these were converted during the Civil War. To find a survivor in original flintlock is a tough nut to crack but here one is, like a big old Brazil-nut. This is an investment quality gun and comes with an original bayonet.

4323 - HARPERS FERRY FLINTLOCK RIFLE, U.S. MARKED 1803 PATTERN WITH 1814 ISSUE DATE AND ALL INSPECTOR MARKS.
This 1803 Harpers Ferry Rifle is special. I don't know if you can see it in the photos, but this gun is in great condition. It has been arsenal converted to percussion and was unquestionably re-finished at the time and retains a beautiful 90% arsenal brown-lacquered finish. The wood is like new with perfect inspection marks and the lock markings are sharp. This is a very nice gun and I doubt you'll find its equal at under $2,000.00 as this gun is.

4321 - ANTIQUE SPRINGFIELD RIFLE, 1871 Rolling Block Rifle, Remington patent.
This U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle is in good condition and priced right. The left side of the frame is marked "MODEL 1871, the right side with the eagle & shield motif over "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872" and the upper tang is marked with two line Remington patent dates. The rifle is finished armory bright with a casehardened action. Square base front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and a swivel on the forward barrel band. The wood has been gently cleaned or sanded but not overly so and retains a light cartouche on the left wrist. The gun shows minimal corrosion, overall grey patina and strong rifling. There are 3 tiny nail-heads showing on the right wrist but I can't tell why as there appears to have never been a crack or damage of any kind. Maybe just for decoration.

4294 - ANTIQUE HENRY RIFLE IN THE EARLY CIVIL WAR SERIAL RANGE.
This is an absolutely untouched Henry right out of a farmhouse in Burton, Ohio and it is very pretty. It had been in the same family since the late 1800's and probably earlier. This gun only has a few minor handling marks to its perch-bellied stock which retains all of its original finish. The frame is a deep and dark, nut-brown patina that shows minor nicks and some staining, probably due to powder residue that was never cleaned off. Its edges are still sharp. The barrel retains about 25% original blue mixing with deep, rich, plum-brown patina and the edges are sharp. Over-all, the gun is sharp and crisp to include all markings and the action. This gun has never been on the market before and is an early, perch-bellied gun in the 10XX range. It is untouched, never cleaned or enhanced in any way, shape or form. Straight out of a 3rd floor closet of an old farmhouse and in very, very fine condition.

This antique rifle is marked "W. S. Chase" on the barrel and "dayton" on the lock. It is in genrally very good condition with an expert crack repair to the wrist. Chase was a riflemaker in Putnam County Ohio and this is a nice offering with a neat but crude little patch-box fashioned on the right side of the stock. Prox. 32 caliber and well-made.

4259 - CIVIL WAR MERRIL CARBINE, MARTIALLY MARKED.
This is a second type Merrill that is extremely crisp. All markings, edges and action are excellent as is the wood with a near perfect cartouche. This gun shows very little use and is way above average condition for this model. The gun is a medium grey patina and looks much lighter in the photos due to the bright light. It lacks the pull-button on the magazine but the spring is still with it. Just needs the button which could easily be fabricated by a competent gunsmith.

4256 - EVANS LEVER-ACTION REPEATING RIFLE.
These rare rifles were the only mass produced firearms to be manufactured in the state of Maine and were unusual in their load system through the butt of the rifle. This one shows generous amounts of original finish scattered about the frame and barrel but the wood is extremely dry. Action and markings are sharp. A little TLC and this is a nice little rifle for the price.

4215 - COLT REVOLVING RIFLE, MARTIALLY MARKED.
This Antique Colt Revolving Rifle is one of those items that gives me great pleasure to present to my customers, especially those that are well-versed in rare Colt variations. Although a novice may pass this off as "just" a Colt Revolving Rifle, it is in fact extremely rare and particularly difficult to find in anything other than "good" condition. This is a 44 caliber full-stock rifle that is martially marked to include full sub-inspections and cartouches on its stock. Classified as a First Model Military Rifle, it is in wonderfully untouched condition with perhaps 40 - 50% aged original military blue mixing with an exquisite, deep, blue-brown patina on it's barrel. The frame shows 40 - 50% vivid military blue mixing with the same patina. The screws are near perfect, showing little evidence that they have ever been accosted by a screwdriver. The butt-stock is near excellent, showing the entire outline of a cartouche with difficult to discern initials to its left wrist marking and a near perfect "WAT" cartouche on the right wrist. The upper tang shows a "Colts" over "Patent" over "US", with no other "Colt" markings or patents on any other metal parts as described in Wilson & Sutherlands book as features of the earliest government ordered Rifles together with its unusual, early tang spurs. Single initial sub-inspector marks on all appropriate parts. There is some chippage to the bottom of the fore-end for about 13" from the muzzle back, a phenomenon that is often seen on this particular model due to the tight fit of the cleaning rod and occurs when returning it to its home position in haste. I have only seen a handfull of these guns offered on the market over a nearly 30 year period, with almost all examples showing a grey patina with NO ORIGINAL FINISH. Of those guns, the lowest priced gun was cleaned to the white revealing pitting over its entire surface. It sold for nearly $10,000.00. This gun is in the 3XX serial range and it is thought that there were fewer than 350 manufactured for the military, making it one of the rarest, lowest production Hartford-made martial arms. Examples are known in the West Point Museum as well as some of the finest collections in the world. If you are a collector of Colt Martial Arms, this is an exceptional specimen and it would be difficult to improve upon this example.

4184 - KENTUCKY RIFLE, HALF STOCK BY AN IDENTIFIED ILLINOIS MAKER.
This Kentucky Rifle is signed by J. Peters and really has a special feature. It's 50 1/2" long overall with a 34 caliber barrel of 35" in length. It's fore-end is a little longer than usual and appears to be completely original, sporting a fore-end plate, a decent patchbox that is lightly engraved and an unmarked lock-plate. It has a brass inlay on both sides of the wrist that facilitates a repair to a cracked wrist and it's solid. The best part of the gun is the barrel that is engraved with vines its entire length and highlighted by some fighting motif to include an arrow and a bold, clipped-point Bowie Knife. A barrel with this much engraving is rare and extremely unusual to show a fighting man's knife in the work. I have received estimates of this guns' value at $2,000 - 5,000.00. I don't know exactly what it's worth but I know that this is an extremely interesting gun and it will make a nice addition to someones collection with its unusual and quaintly engraved barrel.

4171 - HAWKEN PLAINS OR MOUNTAIN RIFLE. ORIGINAL, UNTOUCHED FULL-STOCK HAWKEN RIFLE.
Hawken Rifles are an American icon. This is one magnificent Collectors Rifle, and an OUTSTANDING example of one of the most famous of American Firearms. It is the nicest Hawken Rifle that I have ever owned and offered for sale. Untouched and 100% original with the exception of a repair to the face of the hammer, it is a full-stock Mountain Rifle made specifically for the heavy use of gaming Buffalo, large Bear and anyone that tried to inhibit the effort. This is not the usual half-stock Hawken that most of us are familiar with and see for sale at auction once or twice a year, but a massive full-stock of .56 caliber with a 36" barrel and 16 & 1/2" pull. When I laid eyes on it, I thought its weight would be much more than it was. The barrel, and even the stock itself is extremely thick but the larger bore size lightens the barrel considerably compared to others I have owned or handled and it is suprisingly easy to wield. The gun is nearly perfect in all respects showing little use. The condition of the wood is such that no one could ask or want of better condition, color or texture. All metal parts are an untouched patina and the form of the gun is perfect to include the Hawken trademark scrolls of the triggerguard which protect the double-sets and what I unconditionally guarantee is its original cleaning rod with bone tip. The boldly struck Hawken address dates this gun to the 1850's. As even non-collectors know, the Hawken Rifle is the most famous of all arms used by the great Mountain Men of our Western Frontier. They were manuifactured in the shop of Samuel and Jacob Hawken, who learned the craft of riflemaking from their father Christian Hawken of Maryland. An example of Christians work can be found in our Kentucky rifle section of this website. These guns became famous by being the rifle of choice by the likes of Joseph Meek, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson and others. The movie "Jeremiah Johnson" didn't hurt its reputation. Hands-down, one of my favorite items to ever be posted on this website.

3338 - MODEL 1875 SPRINGFIELD OFFICERS TRAPDOOR RIFLE.
The Springfield Officers Rifles are of the most famous and desirable of all guns manufactured during the Indian Wars period. The Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield was the first standard-issued breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army. In both full-length and carbine versions, the Trapdoor was widely used in the Black Hills War and in subsequent battles during the Indian Wars of the 1870's and 80's. The Springfield Officers Model is considered by collectors as the most beautiful product ever produced by the famed Springfield Armory and of over a half million guns produced, fewer than 500 were Officers Models. These rifles were not issued to officers but were available for special order to any U. S. Army Officer who desired to purchase one of these beautifully engraved specimens. This particular specimen is in excellent condition showing 99% original blue on its barrel showing very slight toning, 70% soft smokey case colors and near mint wood. It shows minor handling marks on the wood and metal surfaces but no field use and is generally in excellent condition. It shows the rare sight configurations of globe and peep front sight, standard rear sight and Creedmore style tang sight adjustable for windage and elevation. The Model 1875 is much more difficult to find in excellent condition than the later versions which are cartouched and dated 1881 or '85. These are most often found in great condition with brighter case colors. This is the earlier, harder to find model and would be a great gun for any antique gun collector and especially for those that specialize or desire examples from the Indian Wars period.

S3261 - CIVIL WAR RIFLE - HISTORICALLY INSCRIBED AND PRESENTED SPRINGFIELD RIFLE.
Every so often, I find something particularly cool. This is one of those items, but I really don't know exactly its significance yet. This is a Model 1855 Springfield Rifle-musket dated 1859. The gun has been specially embellished with German-silver inlays about the fore-end and the lock, hammer and barrel are silver plated which is now turned blue! There is a huge, wonderfull coin-silver inlay inlayed into each side of the stock. One plaque is inscribed, "Prize Musket of the Jo Brown Guard, Reorganized May 1, 1872". The other is inscribed, "Presented to the Jo Brown Guards by Capt. Frank N. Hotchkiss". The date and presentation obviously refer to the Jo Brown Guard of Georgia that saw much service for the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was indeed re-organized in 1872 but there must be some more info out there somewhere concerning this rifle. I'd love to hear from anyone that may be able to shed some light on its presentation. If anyone wants to buy it in the meantime just give me a call. It's for sale at a reasonable price and I hope the undiscovered history of its presentation doubles its value for the buyer. I just need to move it.

S3215 - KENTUCKY LONG RIFLE BY J. H. JOHNSTON OF WAYNESBORO, PA.
I promise to buy a new camera next week and the main reason is my photos don't do justice to guns such as this. This is a simply outstanding Pennsylvania Long Rifle. It is in 44 caliber with a heavy 40&1/4" barrel. I can't describe what wonderful condition this gun is in, save to say that it is almost blemish-free. It shows an almost complete lack of small nicks, dings or scratches that show on even the finest condition guns. The wood is near flawless without a single crack. The barrel, with bold "J.H. Johnson" signature in script, retains about 30% original browning scattered its entire length. The brass mounts to include the patchbox are a fantastic nut-brown patina. It has 15 silver inlays about the gun that include 8 key escuchions and they are engraved so finely that they appear nearly "raised-carved", just fantastic work. In addition, the barrel is attached to the stock with a blind-pin system in that the pins do not come through the silver inlays on either side of the stock. It's simply exquisite work. The cheek-piece shows a fierce American Eagle clutching a shield and last but not least, a beautifull "streaking comet" motif is carved behind its cheek-piece. Now, we all know that this original percussion gun is not "Golden-Age", and we can debate that a good gun by this maker usually sells for less than I am asking. The fact remains that I have shown this gun to my little band of Kentucky lovers and they have seldom encountered such a gun at any shows or collections in the past and agree that this is the finest of its type they have ever seen. They told me I should just take it to a good rifle show and an educated buyer would scarf it up in the first hour. If you like great Percussion Rifles or are contemplating buying your first, give me a call on this gun. It is one of the few that I would bother to take extra photos of to display how truly beautiful it is. It was formerly in the collection of Gerald C. Stowe, former curator West Point Museum in the 1950's. He obviously recognized a great gun when he saw one.

2086 - FIRST-MODEL 1873 WINCHESTER RIFLE. EARLY PRODUCTION WITH THUMB-PIECE DUST COVER AND OUTRAGIOUSLY EMBELLISHED WOOD, MOTHER-OF-PEARL, BRASS AND COPPER INLAYS.
I don't know who did the decorative treatments on this gun, but it is awesome and of the period. I believe this to have been made as a presentation gift to an American Indian or possibly to a member of a Wild West Show. I have never, in 30 years of collecting seen anything quite like it and I guarantee that the work is period. The work is virtually perfect and done "back in-the-day". The gun is crisp as new with a perfect mirror bore and shows little use. The blue has somehow been removed without the slightest hint of sanding or polishing but shows blue on the interior so it didn't leave the factory in the bright. Someone fashioned the gun for it to appear as it does, bright, colorful and beautiful. Really an unusual Winchester that someone was very proud to carry.

1132 - 1851 SHARPS CARBINE.
I won't tout this gun for its condition (which is actually above average for this model). I'll just say that it is a really smooth and unabused example of an 1851 Sharps carbine and they are very difficult to find in this condition. It has a few problems such as a missing sling-bar and a hole that was bored through its stock near the butt-plate. The hole was probably put there early on, as the earlier sling-bars were a bit frail and the hole sufficed as a location for a lanyard. It is plugged with putty or other filler and could be properly repaired by a gun wood restorer. Other than these two problems, this is at very least a very presentable example of a rare gun that someone might use to plug a hole in their Sharps Collection.
